The aesthetic of the traditional kitchen is one that appeals to many of us. When we think of period and cottage kitchens, they’re full of character and charm and evoke a sense of the past, when times where simpler, away from modern stresses.

Traditional kitchens do look and feel calm and homely. But to replicate the style, you can’t simply rip out all the mod cons and go back to basics. The kitchen still needs to be practical and convenient to suit our modern lifestyles.

So, getting that traditional character into your kitchen relies on getting the details right. In fact, it’s the small details that can really bring your interior together.

That’s one of the reasons that gold and brass have been growing in popularity. These metallics are a great way to bring a more traditional feel to our kitchens.

Gold and brass both work well on classically-styled taps as well as cup and beehive handles, enabling you to bring a country cottage or period charm to plain or shaker style kitchen.

Used as accents across the room on taps, handles, rails and light fittings; gold and brass are able to bring a crafted, timeless feel to the space. By using gold and brass highlights throughout the kitchen, these materials also add a touch of luxury and a sense of cohesion to your design too.

But why do these metallics work so well? Partly, it’s down to the warmth these tones bring. A gold or brass tap certainly enhances a white ceramic sink. These golden hues can easily warm up cooler colours such as greys, greens and blues too. So, it’s easy to replicate the welcoming and homely atmosphere of a traditional kitchen without going overboard.

Brass and gold also match the rich, earthiness of muted colours such as pink and taupe. And they have the ability to complement many traditional and modern materials too. They’re the perfect partner to wood, marble and quartz – meaning there are few places where these warm metallics won’t fit in.

Gold and brass can both be used in different ways too. With a patina or an aged finish, they add an authenticity and plenty of character. While a shiny finish, enables these metallics to bounce light around and take centre stage in the kitchen. So, gold and brass are versatile too.
