Responsible Water Usage

UK water shortages become more frequent each year in areas throughout the UK. Each person in the average households uses 142 litres of water per day on average, 70% more than 30 years ago. This dramatic increase in water usage has not been matched by an increase in water treatment and availability, leading to this non-sustainable resource limited supply.

As water users it is our responsibility to become more aware of the impact we are having on the environment through inefficient water usage. Abode recognises the importance of conserving water within the home as well as designing and developing products that help save water.

Follow our ten tips to water and energy preservation.

  1. Thousands of litres of water are wasted per day through not putting the plug in the sink before running the water.
  2. Ensure you fill a bowl to rinse crockery or vegetables for food preparation rather than rinsing directly under a full flowing tap.
  3. Don’t leave the tap running unattended or running fully when not needed for example when lathering your hands prior to washing.
  4. Consider a Pronteau instant hot water tap. The uses are endless but primarily benefit from; no water and energy waste from overfilling the kettle, no re-boiling the kettle when you leave and forget, quickly heat up a bowl of water rather than running the hot tap excessively, fill pans to reduce boiling time, quickly rinse dishes to avoid excessive dishwasher use…..and many more.
  5. Consider water saving (flow limited) products or install a flow-limiting valve to your water supply to restrict the maximum flow of water through the tap and offer a consistent maximum flow rate regardless of the incoming water pressure.
  6. If selecting a new tap and you want a single lever style, look for models which have a cold start valve, this means each time the tap is turned on from the upright off position the water will be cold. This can save you money on energy bills as the boiler is not fired up unnecessarily each time the tap is used, you only get hot or mixed water, when you want it.
  7. Consider a water filter tap (Abode Aquifier), 4 IN 1 Pronteau instant hot water tap or the Abode Swich device to add filtered drinking water to your domestic supply. This cuts down on single-use plastic mineral water consumption. Fill your re-usable water bottle on a night, store in the fridge overnight and you’re good to go the next morning.
  8. When installing a new boiler or tap try and maintain the shortest possible pipe runs from your water heater to the tap meaning hot water runs hot quicker.
  9. If you notice your tap is dripping check joints and seals, if they are worn you will need to replace the O-rings and possibly the valve as well - a dripping tap can waste up to 140 litres of water per week! Visit www.tap-spares.com for genuine Abode spare parts.
  10. Set the temperature of your boiler so the maximum output temperature is 46°C, this is hot enough to kill bacteria & cut through grease. If your water temperature is higher than this you will be wasting energy, risking scalding accidents and potentially damage your tap. If your boiler does not have temperature control, install a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) this will achieve the same results.
