The key to achieving a scandinavian style around your home

Scandinavian interior design is known for its clean-lined, modern style but unlike minimalism, it places an emphasis on practicality and uses natural materials and texture to bring a warmth and comfort to our homes. This makes it a popular choice for creating a cohesive and functional environment that also feels comfortable and timeless.

Achieving this look around your home isn’t as tricky as it might seem. In fact, the key to success is keeping things simple. So, think quality over quantity when it comes to your furnishings. This means you can keep your spaces uncluttered and easy to clean.

What does this mean in practice? Instead of over-filling the kitchen with base and wall units and cluttering worktops with endless small appliances, you might focus on getting just the right number of handcrafted cabinets fitted and choose only the most efficient and streamlined appliances such as an instant hot water tap. This enables you to hit the right balance of form and function and helps you to keep your home organised and relaxed.

As natural materials are central to Scandinavian styling, you ideally want to bring in plenty of wood, stone and organic fabrics to the mix. This could be bamboo flooring, wooden bed frames and granite worktops. Incorporate plenty of cotton, jute and linen in the soft furnishings to add more texture and warmth to the design. You can do this through the use of rugs, throws, lampshades and upholstery. Plants are also a great way to increase this connection to nature.

Although we might think of Scandinavian styling in terms of a strictly white colour scheme, there’s really no need to stick to pure white in every room as a muted palette of warm neutrals works well. As does the use of accent colours derived from the natural world. This means there’s room to feature beige, brown and terracotta along with greys and greens, helping to sooth your soul and make your home feel cosy.

Although clutter should be kept to a minimum, you want your interiors to feel like home. So, don’t be afraid to carefully curate your décor to include artwork and beloved ornaments. Afterall, Scandi styling should make your life better and it should be beautiful as well as practical. Just remember that less is often more.
