Scandi and sustainable kitchen styles for 2024

Our idea of the kitchen has seen a transformation over the last few years. Rather than a space for work, we want kitchens to be social spaces that bring happiness and have a calming feel.

So, it’s no wonder that Scandi-style kitchens are one of the top trends emerging this year. At the core of Scandi designs you’ll find a combination of functionality, clean lines and good-quality materials, bringing with it a balance of neutral colours, texture and natural light. All perfect elements for a practical and joyful kitchen.

Modern Scandi kitchens have evolved to become more homely without an increase in clutter. This minimalist approach with lots of crisp whites and cool greys is tempered by warmer tones from bare wood and black and gold metal accents, along with pops of green provided by plants. With this style, you might find white walls punctuated by slatted wood panelling and gold wall lights. An island might combine unpainted wood cabinets with a white worktop and sink and sleek black bar stools.

Taking the Scandi aesthetic a step further, sustainable styles that are inspired by nature, are more important to us than ever before. Our love of the outdoors sees warm brown and green tones playing a central role in the look of our kitchens. But combined with this is our awareness of the environment. This means we’re making more conscious choices – seeking out natural materials such as wood and stone that are responsibly-sourced along with recycled products and eco-paints.

Although subtle and minimalist styles are emerging as the most popular trends this year, there’s a growing desire to make sure our kitchens not only reflect who we are but radiate our personality.

This means we’re turning towards using bespoke components in our designs to give them a uniqueness. This individuality might be displayed through the use of a bold colour or patterned wallpaper in one area or through the choice of tiles or lighting. Or it might be achieved through custom upholstery on dining benches or open shelves displaying treasured pieces. Whatever approach we use, it’s clear that more and more of us are making room to show off our own signature style.

What’s also clear from these top trends is that we’re taking more time to think about what makes our kitchen feel like home.
