How to use the sink to enhance working space

As dishwashers are now a common feature in kitchens, you might think that the sink has a less important role to play in the function of the room. But in reality, the opposite is true. The sink area still needs to juggle the washing and draining of produce and be able to rinse dishes amongst other duties. With space at a premium and time ever more precious, the sink has to meet more demands than ever.

So, how do we make sure our sink performs these multiple roles well, even in a small kitchen? And how can the sink be used to enhance our workspace?

A common misconception is that a sink needs a lot of space in order to carry out a range of tasks. In fact, new, forward-thinking designs mean you can now have all the conveniences of a wide double sink and drainer without the large footprint.

Going for a deep bowl that’s capable of being filled to the brim gives you the capacity to rinse off and soak large pans and trays. And choosing a bowl with an overflow recessed at the side means you can drain liquids without needing a separate bowl.

But if you do prefer to have two bowls, opting for an undermount sink and caddy gives you a discrete sink area that maximises your worksurface and doesn’t interfere with your clean lines. Using a flexible rack instead of a traditional draining board frees-up even more worktop space.

To make your sink fully multifunctional, it’s worth considering a customisable system such as those in the Synchronist Collection. To streamline your sink set-up further, the bowls are designed with a handy rail – enabling you to slot a colander and flexible rack onto the bowl. So, this efficient sink system can drain veggies and dishes in the smallest of spaces. The addition of a prep board that fits over the top enables you to increase your usable workspace. Something that’s invaluable in a compact kitchen where there’s limited worktop space and no room for an island.

In a tiny kitchen, this type of system really stacks up. But you can increase the functionality by pairing your industrious sink with an equally hardworking tap. For instance, a slim mixer tap with a pull-out spray optimises your space while offering you plenty of functionality.
